ER Model · One Clean Setup
September 17 — A+ Read, Rough Delivery.
A genuinely nice trade that just didn't play out. Expansion down, retracement into the OTE, and bullish SMT against ES confirming the low — the kind of setup that lines up every piece. There was one wrinkle I flagged before I ever clicked buy: ES had already taken its own BSL up top ahead of NQ, a minor conflict against the long. Graded it a minor con on an otherwise A+ trade — the kind I take 10 times out of 10. Took it. Stopped for a clean 1R loss on an overall rough session for NQ.

The Trade — Expansion Retracement Long, OTE Entry
MNQ 1m · entry from the 0.62–0.79 zone, LRL and EQLs below, above midnight · −1R
Textbook shape: expansion down to the swing low, then a retracement back up into the 0.62–0.79 OTE zone — LRL sitting below, EQLs below that, the whole zone sitting above midnight open. Bullish SMT against ES confirmed the low held. The one thing I noted going in: ES had already run its own BSL up top before NQ did — a minor conflicting signal, not a disqualifying one. Graded it anyway and took the long. Price never gave the continuation, and the stop did its job at 1R.
A+ Loss
Naming the risk before you take the trade is what makes the loss clean instead of a mistake.
Every piece of my model was on the chart: the expansion, the retracement into the OTE, SMT against ES confirming the low. The one wrinkle — ES clearing its own buyside before NQ did — wasn't something I found after the fact to explain a loss. I saw it and graded it before entry, called it a minor con, and took the trade anyway because the setup was still A+ underneath it.
That's the actual skill being tested here, not the R. A+ setups get taken every time, including the ones that lose — that's not a consolation line, it's the math the whole model is built on. One clean 1R loss, on a day that was rough for NQ more broadly, doesn't say anything about the read. It says the read was right and the market didn't owe it delivery today.
